Autumn Rowan-Hull

Fascial Stretch Therapist

Autumn has completed a Bachelor of Science, Masters of Science and a Dphil at Oxford University (2000). Her research has focused on the development of the nervous system and the tissue that makes muscles, bones and fascia. This work has also led her into the field of anatomy where she holds a post at Oxford University to date.

This combinations of research and anatomy gives her a rare and unique background to allow her to comprehend the body as a whole. Autumn has a talent for understanding the dynamic body and an interest in maximising its functional abilities. What connects this interest together with her research and anatomy, is fascia.

Fascia is the connective tissue that is found continuously all over the body which attaches, stabilises, encloses muscle groups, tendons and ligaments. It is also able to separated our muscle as well as being found under our skin and deeper within our organs. Furthermore, fascia is highly vascularised and works directly with our nervous sytem.

This in depth understanding of fascia fuels Autumn's desire to work with the living body and anatomy; to understand it better and improve its function. Autumn has harnessed this understanding of fascia by training as a Fascial Stretch Therapist (FST) in Arizona, USA, at the Stretch to Win Institute.

The aim of FST is to Improve functional and athletic performance, increases specific flexability and reduces injury. A recent systematic review on stretching from mutiple studies shows it increases range of motion, it improves dynamometer measured power as well as jumping and running performance.
